Social skills programs offered for youths

AIM Independent Living Center has some upcoming social skills programs for young people ages 14-21 with developmental disabilities, including social skills classes, a spring dance, and summer day camps.

AIM will be offer social skills classes in March and April. There will be four classes: Communications skills (March 20), healthy living and budgeting (March 27), hopes and dreams for the future (April 3), and coping with stress and anxiety (April 10). All the classes are from 4-6 p.m. at the Elmira AIM office, 350 W. Church St. Participation is free.

We’ll also host Spring Fling, a dance party, from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 11 at the Elmira AIM office. The cost is $3.

AIM is also planning a trio of week-long summer day camps, which include community outings and focus on building communication and independent living skills. They will be offered June 25-29 in Schuyler County, July 23-27 in Steuben County and Aug. 20-24 in Chemung County. They run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily with lunch provided. Space is limited and the registration deadline is June 19.

Participants must live at home and have eligibility with the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). OPWDD Family Support Services provides funding for these programs.
